NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tigers have earned the top spot in the BOXTOROW media poll after jumping out to a 2-0 start this season. Tennessee State jumped three spots after defeating Jackson State 35-25 at the Southern Heritage Classic on Saturday.
The Tigers received seven first place votes, along with North Carolina A&T, but received the nod with 147 points, 13 more than the Aggies. Rounding out the top five is South Carolina State, Alcorn State and Tuskegee.
In the Coaches Poll, The Tigers and the Aggies are tied for second, behind 2014 HBCU National Champions, Alcorn State. ASU claimed eight first place votes, while the Tigers garnered four and NCA&T received three.
TSU begins the season 2-0 for the second time in the Rod Reed era. The Tigers opened the 2012 season at 7-0, on its way to an 8-3 record.
The Big Blue won an HBCU National Championship in 2013 and started the 2014 season at the top of the polls.
The Tigers will travel to Jacksonville State on Saturday to begin Ohio Valley Conference play. The Gamecocks are 1-1 after dropping a heartbreaking overtime loss at FBS No. 6, Auburn.
