OPENING TIP: The Tennessee State men’s basketball team will host Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday at the Gentry Center for an exhibition game to kick off the 2018-19 season. Game time is set for 7 p.m. The exhibition game will be the first for TSU Head Coach Brian “Penny” Collins.
ABOUT THE TIGERS: TSU brings back six letterwinners from a year ago including starting point guard Armani Chaney, who averaged 7.8 points, 3.7 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game last season. Chaney and the leading scorer among TSU’s returners, guard Kamar McKnight (8.5 ppg), will form an experienced backcourt for the Tigers. Collins will work to blend a talented group of newcomers with the returners, including four players who redshirted in 2017-18.
ABOUT TENNESSEE WESLEYAN: Tennessee Wesleyan is a member of the Appalachian Athletic Conference and competes at the NAIA level. Under the direction of first-year Head Coach Ray Stone, the Bulldogs are 2-1 on the season with wins over Hiwassee College and Rust led by Ty Patterson (14.7 ppg; 8.7 rpg).
SERIES HISTORY: TSU and Tennessee Wesleyan have never met for a regular season game.
STAYING LOCAL: Wednesday’s exhibition game is the first of numerous games versus opponents from the state of Tennessee on TSU’s 2018-19 schedule. In non-conference action, the Tigers will also face Lipscomb, Fisk, Memphis and Vanderbilt before squaring off with Tennessee Tech, Belmont, Austin Peay and UT Martin in Ohio Valley Conference play.
UP NEXT: TSU officially opens the season on Nov. 10 with a road game at Lipscomb at Allen Arena at 3 p.m.
