OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

WOMEN (5K): 9 a.m. | MEN (8K): 10 a.m.
STARTING LINE: The Tennessee State men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship at Percy Warner Park in Nashville on Saturday morning. The women’s 5K will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the men’s 8K at 10 a.m.
LASTS TIME OUT: TSU’s last competition prior to the OVC Championship came on Oct. 1 when the women’s team earned a 38th place finish and the men took 40th at the Louisville Sports Commission Cross Country Classic. Kenyana Hampton (Pittsburgh, Pa.) clocked in at 19:33.25 to lead the women’s team in the 5K, while Quamel Prince (Nashville, Tenn.) paced the men’s team for the fourth time on the year with a 26:46.73 finish in the men’s 8K.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: Tennessee State has finished 12th in each of the last four OVC Championships on both the men's and women's sides. The top finish for the men’s team came in 1989 when the Flying Tigers captured sixth place. The Tigerbelles have finished has high as sixth on four occasions, the last coming in 2001. Candice Simon, who earned ninth place at the 2000 OVC Cross Country Championship, is the only TSU runner to place in the top 10 in the event in school history.
PRESEASON POLL: TSU was tabbed as the underdogs in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Polls. Tennessee State checked in at 12th place in both polls. Eastern Kentucky was chosen as the OVC preseason favorite for the men and women.
