Tennis teams fall at Eastern Illinois, continues road play at Austin Peay

Charleston, Ill. - The Tennessee State University men and women tennis teams loss their OVC match-ups at Eastern Illinois' Rex Darling Courts on Saturday (4/3).

TSU's women move to 0-7 (0-6 OVC) while the men post a record of 0-5 (0-4 OVC). The Panthers' men and women improve to 4-13 (1-4 OVC) and 5-10 (2-4 OVC).

TSU dropped the women's double point to EIU 8-0, 8-2, in No. 1 (Haynes/Johnson) and No. 2 (Stewart/Mason) play.

Meagan Haynes (0-7, 0-6 OVC) surrendered her match in No. 1 singles to Amanda Dibbs (3-11, 1-4 OVC), 6-2, 6-1.

In the No.2 match, Lia Stewart (0-7, 0-6) fell 6-0 in both games to Cara Huck (3-10, 2-3 OVC).

Khadijah Williams (0-3, 0-2 OVC) in No. 6 play was edged by Carol Rutili (1-0, 1-0 OVC), 8-5.

For the men, Lawrence Washington (1-4, 1-3 OVC) loss the No.1 match to Jeff Rutherford (8-8, 2-1 OVC), 6-3, 6-2, and Justin Hamm dropped No. 2 play (0-5, 0-4 OVC) 6-2, 6-1, to Jamie Firth (2-14, 1-3 OVC).

In doubles play, Washington and Hamm played a tightly fought match against Rutherford and Justin Haag, but fell, short, 8-7.

Next up, the Tigers will play on the road when they travel to Clarksville, Tenn. to play Austin Peay State.  The match is scheduled for Wednesday, April 7, at 2 p.m. on the Austin Peay Tennis Courts.

One of the top teams in the conference, the Lady Govs (12-3, 5-1 OVC) have won 10 out of their last 11, 7-0 at home, including a 6-1 conference win over Morehead State (4/3). 

Predicted to finish seventh during the preseason, their top players in singles include: 2010 OVC preseason selection and 2009 All-OVC first team, Mariana Pagan (15-3, 5-10 OVC), 2009 All-OVC second team, Michelle Liew (11-7, 4-2 OVC), No. 1 player, Vanja Tomic (12-2, 6-0 OVC), and No. 2 player, Carolin Weikard (10-3, 5-1 OVC).

No. 1 doubles team consists of Pagan and Tomic (12-2, 6-0 OVC).

For the men, the Governors (3-5, 0-4 OVC) were predicted to finish sixth in the early season rankings. They currently ride a two-game skid losing to Morehead State, 4-3 and are 2-3 at home.

2010 preseason selection and 2009 All-OVC second team, Leonardo Locatelli (5-7, 1-3 OVC), and Henriquez Norbiato (8-4, 2-2 OVC) are the team's top players in singles play. Norbiato and Sean Bailey  (10-3, 3-1 OVC) are the top doubles combination for the Govs.

Next, Tiger Tennis will take on Western Kentucky for their final home match of the season on Sunday, April 11th. Match time is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the TSU Tennis Complex.
