ATLANTA --- In the first matches of the fall season, the Tennessee State men’s tennis team had six wins and six losses during day one of the 15th annual HBCU Tennis Championships at the South Fulton Tennis Center on Thursday.
Set up as an individual tournament with three singles flights and two doubles flights, TSU posted a 6-6 mark in singles action.
Competing in Flight A singles, sophomore Jorge Rodriguez lost to Hampton’s Miguel Suarez in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Junior Shashank Nautiyal had a pair of victories in Flight B singles to stamp his ticket to the quarterfinals. Nautiyal downed North Carolina Central’s Max Konovalov and before winning his second match in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Senior Kyle Burton won his first match against Alcorn State’s Suyash Gupta by a score of 2-6, 6-1and 10-8.
In Flight C Larry Sloan, Matthew Brown and junior Grant Maddox all won their first match in three sets. Sloan won four matches points to earn his first collegiate win. However, all three Tigers would lose in straight sets later on in the day.
Action in the tournament will continue tomorrow.
