BRENTWOOD, Tenn. --- The Tennessee State men’s tennis team earned a share of the Ohio Valley Conference Team Academic Achievement Award for the 2016-17 academic year, it was announced on Monday. The awards are presented annually in each Conference-sponsored sport to the member institution's team with the greatest percentage of its eligible student-athletes who achieved a 3.25 grade point average or higher.
Seven of TSU’s players earned at least a 3.25 grade point average during the 2016-17 academic year. It is the first time in school history that the men’s tennis team has won the award. TSU and EKU tied for this year's award for men's tennis.
“I’m very pleased to be honored by the OVC in this capacity and very impressed by the men’s team’s academic discipline this past year,” TSU Head Coach Monroe Walker III said. “I’m proud to have a team of young men who value academic achievement just as much as their success on the court. I hope to continue the rich academic tradition of this program in the years to come.”
- The OVC first handed out Team Academic Achievement Awards for the 2004-05 academic year.
- This award marks the first OVC Team Academic Achievement Award for the TSU men’s tennis program.
- The men’s golf team is the only other TSU program to earn the honor in the history of the award.
- The TSU men’s golf team won the Team Academic Achievement Award for the 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 academic years.
