ATLANTA --- The Tennessee State men’s tennis team finished fourth in the HBCU Invitational. The team had one singles championship, a doubles championship and a consolation championship.
“I’m impressed by the way the men’s team competed this week to place second overall, said Head Coach Monroe Walker III. “This is a huge first-time accomplishment for the men’s program. It honestly came as a surprise to me given that we went into this tournament a relatively inexperienced team with primarily newcomers and underclassmen. The men’s team as a whole rose to the occasion and exceeded expectations in a major way. I’m ready to continue to work hard so that the team can carry this momentum into the regular season.”
Competing in Flight C singles, sophomore Tanishq Mahendru won the championship defeating Federico Mendieta of Jackson State, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Pavle Popovic and Shashank Nautiyal advanced to the championship and beat Jackson State’s Stylianos Gkontsaris and Vishu Prasad, 8-3.
For the men, fall play is complete. They will continue play in the spring.
