BRENTWOOD, Tenn. --- Senior James Faison earned adidas® OVC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week and freshman R’Lazon Brumfield won adidas® OVC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week following their standout performances for the Tennessee State men’s track and field team to kick off the indoor season.
Faison and Brumfield won the award on Tuesday from the Ohio Valley Conference, which took into consideration action from December as well as the first week of January.
Faison was the top collegiate finisher and was second overall in the 200m at the Ed Temple Classic on Sunday. The senior clocked in at 22.05 - the 57th best time in the nation and best in the OVC this year. He also earned two top five finishes at the Vanderbilt Opener in December. Faison placed fourth in the 400m with an OVC best time of 48.07 - also the ninth best nationally. He went on to take third in the 60m with the league’s second-best time of 6.88.
Brumfield earned his weekly award based on his performance at the Vanderbilt Opener in December. The freshman won the triple jump in his first collegiate meet with a mark of 15.31m (50’2.75”) - the best in the league this year and fifth best in the nation. He also claimed third in the long jump with a distance of 7.22m (23’8.75”), which is first in the OVC and 36th in the nation this indoor season.
Next up for TSU is a trip to Birmingham, Ala. for the Blazer Invitational on Jan. 12 and the Vulcan Invitational on Jan. 13.
