Faison Earns Athlete of the Championship; Flying Tigers Take Fifth at OVC Indoor Championship

CHARLESTON, Ill. --- James Faison earned two individual gold medals and one in the 4x400m relay to take home the Athlete of the Championship award for the Tennessee State men’s track and field team on the final day of the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championship at Lantz Fieldhouse on Saturday.

TSU, which placed fifth with 82 points, won four individual gold medals to go with one in the relay.

  • James Faison is the second Flying Tiger to win Athlete of the Championship for the indoor championship and first since Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie won the award in 2007. TSU’s Buford Williams also won the award for the outdoor Championship in 2006.
  • Faison captured the gold medals in the 400m in 48.43 and the 200m in 21.78.  
  • In the 4x400m relay, Faison teamed with Jontue McDowell, Isaiah Olige and Jamario Scott for a winning time of 3:21.78.
  • Freshman R’Lazon Brumfield won his second gold medal in as many days, posting Saturday’s top triple jump distance of 15.23m (49’11.75”). Yesterday, Brumfield captured the gold in the long jump.
  • After earning two silver medals throughout his career, senior Jemarruse Amos secured his first gold medal in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.12 on Saturday.
  • Olige won another medal, taking the bronze in the 60m hurdles after clocking in at 8.23.
