My TSU Experience: Jontue McDowell

A four-time OVC medalist, Jontue McDowell played a vital role in the success of the Tennessee State men’s track and field team since transferring from Virginia Union three years ago. During his time in Nashville, McDowell won gold medals with the 4x400m relay team at the 2017 OVC Outdoor Championship and the 2018 OVC Indoor Championship to go with silvers at the OVC Indoor and Outdoor Championships in 2016. McDowell, who also competed in cross country for TSU, earned OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll accolades for his work in the classroom. Jontue earned a bachelor of science from Tennessee State on May 5 with a 3.2 GPA. He shared his college experience with tsutigers.com.

TSUTigers: Talk about your overall TSU experience.
A: My overall experience was good with some ups and downs

TSUTigers: What do you love most about TSU?
A: The parties, homecoming and Tiger Field

TSUTigers: What will you miss most about TSU?
A: My friends and teammates

TSUTigers: What is your most memorable moment in your sport at TSU?
A: Most memorable moment in sports was when we dominated the 4x400 relay at outdoor conference

TSUTigers: What is your most memorable non-sport moment at TSU?
A: Homecoming 2015, and my junior year

TSUTigers: What are some accomplishments/goals that you reached at TSU?
A: Making Dean’s list and graduating

TSUTigers: Do you have a favorite TSU fan/supporter? If so, who?
A: Yes, Kayla Workman

TSUTigers: What advice would you give to incoming freshman?
A: Manage your time wisely and stay on top of your work and things you have to do

TSUTigers: What was your most challenging class at TSU?
A: Chemistry II and Organic Chemistry

TSUTigers: Who was your favorite professor?
A: Valencia Price

TSUTigers: Who have been the most influential people to you at TSU?
A: Mr. Perry and Mrs. Bailey

TSUTigers: What’s next for you?
A: Work on going pro in track and field and become a firefighter

TSUTigers: Once you are an alumnus, how will you stay connected with TSU?
A: Through my younger teammates who don’t graduate until later on

TSUTigers: What do you know now that you didn’t know coming in as a freshman?
A: Didn’t know how fun and easy college can be when you are enjoying yourself

TSUTigers: What have you learned at TSU that you will keep with you for the rest of your life?
A: Communicate with people because you never know who you’ll need

TSUTigers: Is there anything else that you would like to say to the TSU family?
A: Yes, I’m out of here. Keep pushing forward
