Moments in TSU History: Washington Sets the Tennis Standard

After transferring to Tennessee State and joining the tennis team, Lawrence Washington immediately moved to the number one position on the team and remained there for three straight seasons.

Washington compiled a 10-6 record in 2011 and a 7-4 mark in 2012. He became the first TSU men's tennis player to be named All-OVC.

On the court, Washington's senior season was highlighted by four three-set matches that could have gone either way. Washington managed to win two of those matches and he also won his last four matches in a Big Blue uniform. Washington's strong play during the last half of his senior year earned him the 2012 Tennis MVP Award.

Washington also improved every year at Tennessee State from winning four matches in his first season to winning 64 percent of his matches during his senior campaign.

During his three seasons at Tennessee State, Washington won a total of 21 matches, including 10 during his junior season. That year included a victory against in-state foe Memphis.

Washington was also named the OVC Tennis Player of the Week three times over the course of his career. Two of those times happened following a two-week stand during his junior season in which he won four out of five matches against primarily conference opponents. The other time he won the award was a stretch during his senior season in which he was a perfect 4-0 in singles play and 1-0 in doubles.

Off the court, Washington excelled in the classroom, and his 3.8 GPA was the highest on the team. Washington's hard work in the classroom made him an ITA Scholar Athlete for four consecutive seasons and in 2012 he received the Academic Excellence Star Award. In May, the Canton, Mich., product earned a spot on the Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar Tennis team. Washington graduated in the spring as Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in Political Science.

In 2017, Washington was named tot the Top 40 under 40 list for Business Professionals/Executives in the Nation by The Network Journal.
