Tiger Volleyball Announces 2018 Schedule

2018 TSU VOLLEYBALL SCHEDULE

NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State volleyball Head Coach Donika Sutton announced the 2018 schedule on Thursday. The Tigers will play a 28-game schedule against opponents from the Big East, Big South, Conference USA, Atlantic Sun, Missouri Valley, MEAC and SWAC before entering OVC action.

This year’s slate is highlighted by three preseason tournaments at Florida International, Chattanooga and Stephen F. Austin, as well as a trip to Evansville.

“We’re going to be going to Florida International our first weekend out, and there we will be playing FIU, FAMU, as well as Stetson. I think that’s a great mixture of talent – different conferences, and it’s just going to give us a different feel, in a different region, with different play. I do believe we can be successful in that tournament, and I’m definitely hoping for a great outcome,” Sutton said.

From there, Big Blue will take the two-hour road trip to Chattanooga for the Chattanooga Classic. The Tigers kick off the packed weekend against Big South competitor UNC-Asheville before hosting Alcorn State in a rematch from last year’s 3-0 sweep at the Tiger Invitational. The next afternoon, TSU challenges the new members of the Atlantic Sun Conference, North Alabama, before playing the host team at 8 p.m. that evening.

Preseason tournament action ends in Texas.

“The third weekend, we go to Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas. We have a lot of Texas kids on our roster, and this is a good time for them to play in front of their families and get that home feel. We’re going to be going up against Grambling, SFA and St. John’s which is a great mixture of talent. I’m expecting everyone to show up and show out for their families.”

In Sutton’s second year at the helm of the Tigers, a balance of competition was a focus for the team.

“I still want us to play cool, calm and collected and play our game – no matter where we are,” said Sutton. “I think the conference this year is definitely going to elevate, as we have a lot of new coaches, which means we have a lot of new teams, and everyone is coming in hungry and ready to compete," said Sutton.

TSU will host only nine matches in Kean Hall this season, the least since 2013. Of those, one of is a non-conference match in MTSU the other at Evansville.
