Tigers Fall to Chatt, UNC-Asheville on Day Two of Chattanooga Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Tennessee State volleyball closed out the weekend at the Chattanooga Classic dropping two matches – the first 3-1 (25-12, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20) to host Chattanooga and the second to UNC-Asheville, 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22).

After its time at Maclellan Gym, the Tigers are 1-5 overall.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Three Tigers registered double-digit kills – Rachel Henderson (13), Julia Pierson (11), Gina Rivera Ortiz (21).
  • Rachel Henderson recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs.
  • The blue and white combined for 12 blocks, led by redshirt-junior Hinalei Fihaki (6).

SET BY SET

First Set: Te’o set Pierson for a back row kill to score the Tiger’s first point of the day. The Tiger’s leading blockers Fihaki and Henderson registered the first block. A Pierson kill breaks Chatt four-point run. Big Blue struggled to adjust to the high tempo. The Mocs held the team to only five kills in the first set and won, 25-12.

Second Set: UTC again held the Tigers to less than ten kills and a .000 hitting percentage, however the Tigers managed to post five blocks holding the Mocs to just .028 attack average. The lack of offensive power hurt TSU as UTC took the second set, 25-20.

Third Set: Khalia Jordan scored the first-of-five points for the Tigers as they went on a five-point run. The Tigers never let go of that lead. The team hit for a .200, had 25 digs and two blocks to win the set 25-21.

Fourth Set: After a hard-fought set with two lead changes and four ties, a late four-point run for TSU put them in reach of a fifth set, but two Mocs kills and an ace ended the match, 25-20.

MATCH NOTES

  • The series versus UTC moves to 2-7, breaking the previous two-win streak.
  • Rachel Henderson posts her third double-double of the season.
  • Laken Te’o hit 200 in the assists category.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Freshman Gina Rivera Ortiz recorded her 100th She sits at 108 digs on the season.
  • Two Tigers recorded double-doubles; Rachel Henderson posted her third of the season with 16 kills and 13 digs, Julia Pierson posted her second of the season with 11 kills, 15 digs.
  • Three Tigers registered double-digit kills (Henderson, Pierson and JoJo Kruize). Three registered double-digit digs (Henderson, Pierson, Rivera Ortiz).

SET BY SET

First Set: JoJo Kruize goes up to block Bulldog Cara Gutherie for the first point of the match. The Tigers had an aggressive first set with Pierson and Kruize posting 10 kills and Rivera Ortiz digging up five balls. The blue and white held the lead for much of the set before Asheville tied it at 22 and took the first set on an ace, 25-22.

Second Set: Four tied scores made for another close set between the Tigers and the Bulldogs. Rivera Ortiz finished the set with her 100th dig as a Tiger. The Tigers outperformed the Asheville in each category, hitting a .182 compared to a .162, dug up 15 attacks compared to 14, and put down 4 blocks compared to 3. However, three service errors and two reception errors put the Bulldogs over the top to win, 25-21.

Third Set: The set starts off with a Pierson/Henderson block, followed by two Henderson kills. Pierson held down the defense with eight digs and two block assists. The team hit for a match-high .375 and the backcourt combined for 20 digs, helping keep the Bulldog offense at bay. The Tigers took control early in the match and finished over UNC-Asheville, 25-19.

Fourth Set: Henderson continued her dominance at the net recording the set-high four kills and one block assist with Hinalei Fihaki. The Bulldogs hit a .345. Combined with four blocks and a service ace, UNC-Asheville took the lead after TSU’s opening three-point run and won 25-22.

MATCH NOTES

  • Rachel Henderson was named to the All-Chattanooga Classic Team.
  • The series against the Bulldogs sits at 0-2.

UP NEXT

Big Blue heads to Nacogdoches, Texas for the Stephen F. Austin’s Fredonia Hotel/Holiday Inn Express SFA Invitational Sept. 7-8. The Tigers will kick off the weekend against host SFA, Friday at 1:30 p.m.
