MATCH INFORMATION: The Tennessee State volleyball team continues non-conference tournament play at the Fredona Hotel/Holiday Inn Express SFA Invitational the weekend of Sept. 6. The Tigers look to compete against Stephen F. Austin, St. John's and Grambling. The Tigers are on a 0-2 streak against the host Purple Aces and defeated the Tigers of Grambling State in its first meeting in 2015. Big Blue will have its first meeting against St. John’s on day one of the tournament.
TSU UPDATE: The Tigers went 0-3 at the Chattanooga Classic, dropping matches to North Alabama in five and Chattanooga and UNC-Asheville in four. Hinalei Fihaki posted 19 blocks over the weekend, helping the Tigers record 15 blocks in the match versus North Alabama - the most since October 2015. Rachel Henderson had double-doubles in every match, and Gina Rivera Ortiz recorded her 100th dig. Henderson’s performance earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team.
ABOUT STEPHEN F. AUSTIN: The Ladyjacks are the first-of-two teams this weekend that run a 6-2 offense. The offense relies on its outside and middle hitters to produce. SFA enters the weekend 5-2, and hosted Louisiana-Monroe in its home opener this Tuesday, sweeping the Warhawks. Senior Peyton Redmond led the Ladyjacks in that win. Add in outside Haley Coleman and middle Danae Daron, SFA has a solid offense that all hold spots in the Southland’s kills rankings.
ABOUT ST. JOHN’S: The Red Storm is looking to continue its two-match winning streak at the SFA Invitational. St. John’s went 3-1 in its tournament last weekend, sweeping Cornell and Siena and defeating Stony Brook in four. Rachelle Rastelli is the go-to offensive power for the Red Storm as she leads the team in kills, attacks and aces, all while hitting a .230. Erica Di Maulo facilitates the 5-1 offense with Amanda Sanabia holding down the backcourt.
ABOUT GRAMBLING: The Tigers are winless going into the weekend. Grambling State’s 6-2 offense has setters Sheila Borders and L’Muriell Thrower setting right sides Kevreion Ward and Tess Reynolds pretty heavily as they lead the roster in kills and attacks. The team has struggles to produce with the team averaging a .067 hitting percentage, only 8.1 kills per set and 9.9 digs per set.
UP NEXT: TSU finishes non-conference play with a quick turnaround trip to Evansville, Indiana to play the Purple Aces Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m.
