GAMEDAY: The Tennessee State women’s basketball team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 6 against Tennessee Tech. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in the Gentry Center. It will be TSU’s second game in three days.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Tennessee State (2-10, 0-3 OVC) has dropped four straight and is most recently coming off a disappointing, 75-56, loss to Jacksonville State Thursday night in the Gentry Center. TSU is still looking for its first OVC win of the season.
Tia Wooten is leading the team with an OVC best 21.1 points per game while Taylor Roberts averages 16.1 points per outing. Kaliya Griffin (7.3 ppg) and Jaden Wrightsell (7.2 ppg) are the next leading scorers for TSU. Wooten and Roberts also lead the team in rebounding.
As a team, TSU is averaging 68.2 points per game while shooting 37.2 from the field and 28.2 percent from three-point range. The Lady Tigers are shooting 71.7 from the free-throw line.
Tia Wooten is ranked 18th in the nation in scoring while TSU is ranked 21st in turnovers forced and 26th in offensive rebounding.
LAST TIME OUT: Tennessee State got off to a slow start and fell behind by as many as 20 points before mounting a comeback that cut the deficit down to just seven points. Jacksonville State, however, outscored TSU 13-1 in the final six minutes of the game to pull away. Tia Wooten posted a double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds. She was the only Lady Tiger to reach double-digits.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Tennessee Tech (3-11, 0-3 OVC) is on a four-game losing skid and is most recently coming off a, 78-59, loss to Belmont on Thursday. The Golden Eagles have three players averaging double-digits: Yaktavia Hickson (10.6 ppg), Kesha Brady (10.5 ppg) and Jordan Brock (10.4 ppg). As a team, TTU is averaging 60.2 points per game while shooting 40.2 percent from the field.
SERIES INFORMATION: Tennessee State will match up with Tennessee Tech for the 67th time in the long series history with the Golden Eagles holding a 54-12 lead. Last year, Tennessee Tech won both times the teams met. TSU has dropped four straight to TTU.
