NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State University women’s basketball head coach Jessica Kern spoke to graduates of the “I am not my hair’ program last Wednesday at Napier Elementary School.
“I am not my hair” is a non-profit program that focuses on anti-bullying, self-confidence and esteem building for 4th grade girls. The graduation signified the completion of the program for 10 young ladies.
“I was honored to be in the presence of such confident young women who have pledged to be their better selves as they matriculate in middle school,” said Kern. “Over the past 15 years I have realized it is imperative, especially with young women, to feed their self-worth, love of self and ability to be confident in the skin they are in. The “I am not my hair" program assists young women in embracing the girl they see in the mirror every day and regardless of color, background or socio-economic status being loved is a necessity, feeling beautiful is a must and feeling as though you have continued support is a non-negotiable. Thank you to Napier Elementary & Dr. Angela Underwood for the invite."
