Celebrating Girls and Women in Sports: TSU Lady Tigers

In honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, members of the Tennessee State women’s basketball team shared their inspiration for playing sports, the importance of women in sports and how sports have impacted their lives.

Lauren Elliott

What/Who inspired you to play sports?
“My older sister inspired me to start playing sports.”

Why is celebrating women in sports important?
“Celebrating women in sports is important, because there have been generations of women before us who have fought for us to have the rights to play sports. Although the fight for equality may not be over, as we continue to acknowledge women in sports we will continue to break barriers for future generations.”

How have sports impacted your life?
“Sports have impacted my life, because it has allowed me to travel places and meet people that I may not have met without basketball connecting us. Also, With the trials that come with sports, it has also brought me closer to God.”

Kaliya Griffin
“My parents are the ones that really encouraged me to play basketball. It is important to celebrate women in sports because it is important for young female athletes to have someone to look up to that looks like them. Sports have opened so many doors for me, one of the biggest ones being college. It has allowed me to travel, meet some of my closest friends and grow as a leader.”

Rekha Berry
Who inspired you to play sports?
“Most definitely my dad.”

Why is celebrating women in sports important?
“To show that women are strong, and even though female sports don’t get the recognition or shine they might deserve; it doesn’t stop them from being extraordinary.”

How have sports impacted your life?
“I think sports truly showed me how strong I really am. Not even in a literal sense but how it has impacted me mentally and how I’ve learned so many valuable lessons through the good and the bad. And of course the amazing people I’ve met on the way.”

Taylor Roberts
“Both my parents introduced me to sports but my mom inspired me to keep going and I am grateful for that. Sports have impacted my life in many ways, meeting new people to learning valuable lessons to understanding that female athletes provide strong influences and show girls the benefits of being active. Young girls need to see the incredible achievements of these amazing athletes and know that they too can accomplish such great things both in their sport and later in their careers and personal lives.”

Who inspired you to play sports?
“My parents inspired me to play sports.”

Why is celebrating women in sports important?
“I feel that celebrating women in sports is important because we do mostly everything that men do with much less to gain throughout and after college.”

How have sports impacted you?
“Sports have impacted my life greatly. They’ve kept me out of trouble, kept me focused and got me to college for free.”

Franceska Brown
Who inspired you to play sports?
“My dad and brothers.”

Why is celebrating women in sports important?
“Celebrating women in sports is important because women have gone through so much to get to the point that we are at now.”

How have sports impacted you?
“Sports have impacted me by making me disciplined in everything I do.”

Asia Sims
Who inspired you to play sports?
“My dad”

Why is celebrating women in sports important?
“I feel it is important because a lot of the time women’s sports go unnoticed.”

How have sports impacted your life?
“Sports have impacted my life because I've been able to go to a lot of different places through sports and also meet a lot of new people.”

Jaden Wrightsell
Who inspired you to play sports?
"Someone who inspired me to play sports was my grandfather who introduced me to my first ball which was a soccer ball."

Why is celebrating women in sports important?
“I feel that celebrating women in sports is important because women are powerful and can do anything that they put their mind to. Anything is possible and female athletes have achieved that goal while excelling and being examples for younger girls who don’t believe in themselves and or have not found a desire in sports yet.”

How have sports impacted your life?
“Sports have impacted my life mentally. My mindset has always been the dictator of how far my talent would take me. With that being said I have built a encouraging spirit and always know that no matter how challenging the sport I play can get, it is “mind over matter” and I can achieve it.”

Isabella Pizzo
Who inspired you to play sports?
“Both of my parents have always pushed me. My father is a coach too so it’s always been in my blood.”

Why is celebrating women in sports important?
“A lot of women don’t get recognition for their amazing talents and athleticism.”

How have sports impacted your life?
“Sports have impacted my life by keeping me on track and giving me goals to continue to set throughout my life.”
