NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State women’s golf team produced the best round in program history on day one of the Town and Country Invitational. The Tigers posted a 36-over, 316, through the first 18 holes, bettering the program’s best round by two strokes, set in the fall of 2015.

Morgan Rood, Haleigh Riley, Kalee Rhodes and Dhani McDowell were joined by Trinidy Pate, who was playing as an individual, in carding career bests. Rood led the Tigers with a 5-over, 70, followed by Riley at 78, Rhodes at 81 and McDowell at 82 to record scoring marks. Savannah Szozda missed scoring for TSU on day one with an 83, while Pate also shot an 83.

Rood hit a drive to the right side of the fairway on No. 10 setting up a pitching wedge to right side of the green. The junior sank a downhill putt from right to left for birdie. Rood followed with a drive down the left side of the fairway on No. 11 before hitting a 4-hybrid to the front of the green. Rood used a 60 degree wedge from 64 yards out to reach the green and drained the downhill putt for birdie.

McDowell matched Rood’s performance on 10 and 11 of consecutive birdies. The sophomore opened the back nine by hitting a drive to the middle of the fairway, leaving 145 yards to the flag. McDowell hit a 6-iron onto the green before draining an aggressive 25-foot putt for birdie. The Lilburn, Ga. product found the middle of the fairway off the tee and pushed a 5-wood into the rough on the right. McDowell knocked a 9-iron from 105 yards out to six feet of the flag to set up the birdie putt.

Pate highlighted her day on the par-4, 3rd, with a chip in for birdie. Pate’s approach shot was to the right, landing on the backside of the green. The freshman used a 56-degree club for the chip-in.

Up Next: The Tigers will close out the fall portion of their season with the final round of the Town and Country Invitational on Tuesday. Trinidy Pate tees off at 10:00 a.m. followed by the TSU squad at 10:10 a.m.
