STARTING LINE: The Tennessee State men’s and women’s track and field teams kick off the 2017-18 indoor season at the Vanderbilt Opener on Saturday, Dec. 2. This marks the fifth-consecutive year that TSU has opened the indoor season at Vanderbilt’s Multipurpose Facility.
THE FIELD: This year’s Vanderbilt Opener field includes Tennessee State (M/W), Alabama A&M (M), Belmont (M/W), Berry (M/W), Campbellsville (M/W), Jackson State (W), Louisville (M/W), Memphis (M/W), Mercer (W), Middle Tennessee (M/W), Murray State (M/W), Southeast Missouri State (M/W), Tennessee Tech (M/W), UT Martin (M/W), Trevecca Nazarene (M/W), Vanderbilt (W) and Western Kentucky (M/W).
LAST TIME OUT: Tennessee State unofficially opened the 2017-18 season with the Blue and White Meet on Nov. 15 at the Gentry Center. James Faison won the 55m and the 300m on the day, while Kyla Jimmar posted victories in the 55m hurdles and the 150m on the women’s side.
ABOUT THE TEAM: Director of Track and Field Chandra Cheeseborough-Guice welcomes back a number of veterans with championship experience. For the Flying Tigers, eight returners have medaled at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship - James Stewart, Jamario Scott, Isaiah Olige, Jontue McDowell, Marc McCoy, Jemarruse Amos, James Faison and David Jones. Cheeseborough-Guice also brings back Mikayla Banks, Cyra Beard, Daimer Gordon, Alexia King, Christian Pryor and Kayla Pryor – all of whom have won OVC medals for the Tigerbelles.
UP NEXT: TSU hosts the Ed Temple Classic on Jan. 7, 2018 at the Gentry Center. The event is TSU’s lone home meet of the 2017-18 season.
