COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Sanaa' St. Andre scored 22 points and Zyion Shannon had 19 more, but the Tigers fell to the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 80-64 on the road Tuesday.
St. Andre led the Tigers (7-16, 4-9) with 22 points and three steals. Shannon added 19 points off of the bench and Caitlin Anderson helped out with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Tennessee State out-rebounded Tennessee Tech 31-24 in Tuesday's game, led by Anderson's eight boards. The Tigers also collected 13 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second-chance points.
The Tennessee State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Tuesday's game, forcing 18 Tennessee Tech turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Lyric Cole led the way individually for the Tigers with five steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 18-9, Tennessee State went on a 5-0 run with 3:02 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Shannon, to narrow its deficit to 18-14. Tennessee Tech answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Tigers down 25-16 entering the second quarter.
Tennessee Tech kept adding to that lead, building a 28-16 advantage before Tennessee State went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Shannon, to narrow its deficit to 28-22. Tennessee Tech responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Tigers trailing 40-30 heading into halftime.
Tennessee Tech continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 47-34 advantage before Tennessee State went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Shannon, to trim its deficit to 47-43 with 5:08 to go in the third. Tennessee Tech countered and stretched its lead to 58-53 heading into the fourth. Tennessee State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled eight of the team's 23 third-quarter points.
Tennessee State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 80-64. Tennessee State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 11 points in the paint.
