Football Falls Short in Comeback Attempt at SEMO

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. —The Tennessee State football team fell 28-12 to SEMO on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in OVC-BS matchups while the Redhawks improved to 2-4 on the year and 1-1 alliance play.

Zack Simmons-Brown paced the Tigers rushing attack by accumulating 55 yards and one touchdown over the course of the game, averaging 7.9 yards per carry. Kendric Rhymes also added 23 yards on the ground.

Justin Hughes pulled in three catches for 57 yards. DeVaughn Slaughter made his presence felt in the passing game, recording six receptions for 55 yards.

Byron Davis showed out for the Tennessee State defense, collecting three tackles and one interception. Micah Gay added seven tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one recovered fumble and Travis Pearson had one recovered fumble in the loss.

The Tigers won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing four turnovers while coughing the ball up three times, with Tennessee State turning those takeaways into six points.

Defensively, Tennessee State held up fairly well against the Southeast Missouri State rushing attack, holding the Redhawks to 176 yards on the ground. The Tigers defense disrupted the Southeast Missouri State passing attack on the way to pulling down two interceptions and breaking up three Redhawks passes.

How It Happened

Tennessee State responded to an early 21-0 Southeast Missouri State lead with a second quarter field goal to narrow the deficit to 21-3.The Tigers then got on the scoreboard again to narrow Southeast Missouri State's lead to 21-6.

Tennessee State cut into Southeast Missouri State's lead with a touchdown with 13:22 remaining in the fourth quarter to make it 21-12. Tennessee State went scoreless the rest of the game while Southeast Missouri State added seven points to finish off the scoring.
