OPENING DRIVE: Tennessee State plays the final of its three nonconference matchups against Southwestern Athletic Conference opponents Saturday when the Tigers visit Florida A&M at Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on HBCU GO. The contest is TSU's third consecutive road game, following trips to Georgia and Alabama A&M. The Tigers enter at 0-3 after a 30-3 loss to Alabama A&M, but the defense recorded three sacks, six tackles for loss and its first interception of the season while limiting the Bulldogs to 126 rushing yards and no rushing touchdowns. Florida A&M enters at 1-2 and returns home after consecutive losses to nationally ranked South Carolina State and Miami. The Rattlers won their only home game, defeating Albany State 20-7 in the season opener. Following this game, the Tigers will have an open date before beginning OVC-Big South play Oct. 3 at Western Illinois.
SERIES INFORMATION: Saturday marks the 56th meeting between Tennessee State and Florida A&M in a series that dates to 1944. The programs met twice during that inaugural season, with TSU winning 19-6 and 12-0. Tennessee State leads the series 31-24 and has won six straight meetings, including a 24-13 victory in the 2017 Tampa Classic. Saturday opens a two-game renewal that will continue in 2027 with TSU serving as the designated home team.
BUILT FOR THE CLASSICS: Tennessee State and Florida A&M have played 21 times in named classics, including 17 meetings in the Atlanta Football Classic or Atlanta Ebony Classic. The programs also met in the 1956 Orange Blossom Classic, 1993 Gateway Classic, 2012 John A. Merritt Classic and 2017 Tampa Classic. They have faced each other during four TSU homecoming games — 1971, 1979, 1994 and 2014.
A CHAMPIONSHIP CLASSIC: Then known as Tennessee A&I, the Tigers defeated Florida A&M 41-39 in the 1956 Orange Blossom Classic. The two-point victory capped TSU's fourth Black college football national championship season under head coach Howard Gentry.
ATLANTA TURNING POINT: Tennessee State's current six-game winning streak against Florida A&M began with a 29-18 victory before 54,202 fans at the 2010 Atlanta Football Classic. The win ended an eight-game series losing streak as Preston Brown rushed for a Classic-record 233 yards and TSU recorded 11 sacks while limiting FAMU to 24 rushing yards.
A STAND AT THE ONE: TSU secured a 17-14 victory over Florida A&M in the 2012 John A. Merritt Classic with consecutive stops from the 1-yard line during the final minute. The Tigers stopped quarterback sneaks on third and fourth down to preserve the season-opening victory.
20,000 ON CAMPUS: A crowd of 20,000 watched Tennessee State defeat Florida A&M 33-20 on Oct. 25, 1969. The attendance remains the third-largest recorded for a game played on TSU's campus.
CROSSOVER CONNECTIONS: Florida A&M's 2026 program features three direct connections to Tennessee State. Assistant head coach and running backs coach Toriano Morgan is a TSU alumnus and former team captain who served as the Tigers' co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach in 2025. FAMU director of football operations and chief of staff Larry Williams is a Rattlers alumnus who joined TSU's staff as running backs coach in 2013. Defensive back Dion Villiers played at TSU from 2022-24 and recorded 49 tackles in 13 games during the 2024 season before transferring to FAMU.
THE GENTRY CLASSIC: Howard "Tubby" Gentry Sr. built a championship legacy on both sides of the TSU-FAMU series. Gentry earned All-America honors at tackle for Florida A&M in 1941 and was a member of the Rattlers' undefeated 1942 Black college national championship team. After joining Tennessee State's staff in 1949, Gentry became head coach and guided the Tigers to a 10-0 record and the 1956 Black college national championship. His only meeting with FAMU as TSU's head coach came in that season's Orange Blossom Classic, where the Tigers defeated his alma mater and former coach Jake Gaither, 41-39. Gentry was inducted into the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1977, the TSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. The Gentry Center on TSU's campus bears his name. His son, Howard Gentry Jr., added another chapter to the family's connection by playing two seasons at FAMU before graduating from TSU and later serving as the Tigers' athletics director.
TALLAHASSEE TIES: As Tennessee State heads to Tallahassee to face Florida A&M, coach Reggie Barlow has connections to players from both of the city's football programs. Barlow shared Jacksonville's 2000 training-camp roster with FAMU fullback Kenneth Williams, who was waived before the regular season. His Florida State teammates with the Jaguars included Todd Fordham from 1997-2000, Zack Crockett in 1998 and Larry Smith in 1999-2000. Barlow shared Oakland's 2001 roster with Crockett, Tony Bryant, Derrick Gibson and Sebastian Janikowski, though he spent that season on injured reserve. On Tampa Bay's 2002 Super Bowl championship team, he was teammates with four more Seminoles: Derrick Brooks, Brad Johnson, Greg Spires and Super Bowl XXXVII MVP Dexter Jackson. Brooks, Johnson and Spires remained his teammates in 2003. Jackson later coached on Barlow's Alabama State staff in 2014 and reunited with him at TSU in 2025. He enters 2026 as the Tigers' assistant head coach, defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator.

PERFECT THROUGH THREE: Preston Hurless has made all three of his field-goal attempts and all three extra-point attempts. Hurless leads Tennessee State with 12 points and has converted field goals from 37, 39 and 45 yards.
RED-ZONE RESULTS: Tennessee State has scored on five of its six red-zone possessions, an 83.3 percent success rate. The Tigers have produced three touchdowns and two field goals on those trips.
LIMITING THE FLAGS: TSU has committed 12 penalties for 109 yards through three games. The Tigers' opponents have been penalized 21 times for 208 yards.
SHARING THE LOAD: Jayden Guy and Cam Bulluck share the team lead with 15 receptions. Guy has accumulated a team-high 202 receiving yards and is averaging 13.5 yards per catch, while Bulluck has recorded 131 yards.
HALE SETS THE PACE: Brendan Hale leads the Tennessee State defense with 21 tackles, including a team-high 11 solo stops. The safety has also registered two pass breakups.
CONTROLLING THE CLOCK: Tennessee State has averaged 31:04 in time of possession and has run 203 offensive plays compared with 191 by its opponents. The Tigers have converted 21 of 50 third-down opportunities for a 42 percent success rate.
FLIPPING THE FIELD: Truette Tumey has averaged 43.4 yards on 16 punts. Five of his punts have traveled at least 50 yards, including a season-long 65-yarder, and two have been downed inside the 20-yard line.
DOUBLE-CENTURY DUO: Two Tigers have reached 200 all-purpose yards. Guy leads the team with 202, all on receptions, while Daion Gaston has totaled 200 with 136 kickoff-return yards, 48 receiving yards and 16 punt-return yards.
LEE LEADS THE OFFENSE: Daylin Lee has completed 53 of 101 passes for 514 yards and one touchdown. He has added 40 rushing yards and one score, giving him 554 yards of total offense and a hand in two of TSU's three touchdowns.
WEEK 2 BY THE NUMBERS VS ALABAMA A&M
1: Joshua Reese intercepted Cornelious Brown at the TSU 25-yard line in the third quarter, ending an Alabama A&M possession on its first play. The Tigers followed with a nine-play, 52-yard drive that reached the AAMU 23.
3: Tennessee State recorded three sacks for 25 yards and six tackles for loss totaling 31 yards. Bryce Gray had a 7-yard sack, Sammy Taylor added a 13-yard sack and Khy'lek Jarrett recorded a 5-yard sack.
4: Cam Bulluck and Jayden Guy shared the team lead with four receptions apiece. Bulluck finished with 50 yards and a team-long 27-yard reception, while Guy recorded 44 yards with a long of 25.
8: TSU's scoring drive covered 58 yards in eight plays and consumed 2:42. Preston Hurless completed the possession with a 37-yard field goal early in the second quarter.
9: Bryce Gray led the Tigers with nine tackles, including three solo stops. He added one sack for 7 yards and 1.5 tackles for loss totaling 8 yards.
12: Brenton Paul led TSU with 40 rushing yards on 12 carries. The freshman added a 4-yard reception to finish with 44 yards from scrimmage on 13 touches.
19: Daylin Lee completed 19 passes to nine receivers for 187 yards. His longest completion was a 27-yard connection with Bulluck during a third-quarter drive.
44.4: Truette Tumey punted five times for 222 yards and averaged 44.4 yards per attempt. He recorded a long of 53 yards and placed two punts beyond 50 yards.
128: Daion Gaston led TSU with 128 all-purpose yards. He totaled 97 yards on three kickoff returns, including a long of 39, and caught three passes for 31 yards.
