Carl Coates Jr., began his role as a compliance specialist with Tennessee State Athletics in August 2022 and was promoted to compliance coordinator in September of 2023. In this role, he is responsible for assisting with day-to-day compliance and student services support.
Coates was selected through the 2022-2023 John McLendon Minority Leadership Initiative Program, which provides opportunities for young leaders in college athletics. Coates is the first McLendon Future Leader to serve at TSU Athletics.
Coates has gained experience in several areas within the sports industry. Some include serving as a reporter for Middle Tennessee State University athletics, Community Relations and Marketing intern at Lipscomb University Athletics, and in the Premium Services department for the Tennessee Titans.
A native of Antioch, Tennessee, Coates received his Bachelor's in Journalism with a minor in athletic administration and a Master's in Sports Industry from Middle Tennessee State University.
