Tennessee State University has appointed Jennifer Bell as Interim Director of Athletics, July 24, 2026.
A respected leader with more than three decades of service to Tennessee State University Athletics, Bell will provide executive leadership and oversight for all aspects of the University’s intercollegiate athletics program. Her extensive institutional knowledge and experience in coaching, compliance, academic support and student-athlete development will provide continuity as the department advances its academic and competitive priorities.
As Interim Director of Athletics, Bell will serve as the department’s chief administrator and oversee athletic programs, departmental operations, budgets, personnel, coaching hires, NCAA and conference compliance, facility management and strategic initiatives. She will work closely with University leadership, coaches, staff and campus partners to support the academic, athletic and personal development of TSU student-athletes.
Bell currently serves as Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services and Senior Woman Administrator. In that role, she directs the day-to-day management of the department’s compliance, academic services and student-support programs. Her work has centered on maintaining institutional accountability while ensuring TSU student-athletes have the resources necessary to succeed in competition, in the classroom and beyond graduation.
Bell began her TSU career in 1991 as an assistant women’s basketball coach under former Head Coach Teresa Phillips. During her 11 years on the coaching staff, she served as recruiting coordinator, oversaw the development of the team’s post players and helped guide the Lady Tigers to back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference championships.
While coaching, Bell developed extensive knowledge of NCAA Division I legislation and its application within an intercollegiate athletics program. That expertise led to her transition into athletics administration in 2002 as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. She later served as Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Associate Athletic Director for Student Services, assuming increasingly broad responsibilities in compliance, academic counseling and student-athlete support.
Throughout her administrative career, Bell has helped write, implement and oversee more than $1 million in grant funding for TSU Athletics. Those resources have supported academic services, student-athlete leadership and development programs, and departmental compliance initiatives.
Bell has also served on numerous NCAA and Ohio Valley Conference committees, contributing her experience to issues affecting student-athlete welfare, academic achievement and institutional compliance. She guided TSU Athletics through two successful NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program Data Reviews, and under her leadership, the department has maintained an exemplary compliance record with no NCAA Level I or Level II violations.
Her commitment to student-athlete academic success earned her the 2023 Ohio Valley Conference Thurston Banks Award for Distinguished Academic Service. The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the academic success, learning and development of OVC student-athletes while demonstrating a sustained commitment to their institution’s athletics program.
Bell was also recognized as a 2023 Women of Legend and Merit honoree by Tennessee State University.
A native of Clarksville, Tennessee, Bell earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Fisk University in 1991. As a student-athlete at Fisk, she was a four-year women’s basketball letter winner, a three-time CIAC All-Conference selection and a member of the University’s 1,000-point club. She later earned a master’s degree in Sport Administration from Tennessee State University.
Bell’s appointment brings a student-athlete-centered leader with a deep understanding of Tennessee State University, its athletics tradition and the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics. In the interim role, she will lead the department’s continued pursuit of academic excellence, competitive success, fiscal responsibility and an outstanding student-athlete experience.
