TSU Volleyball Wins Defensive Battle Over Austin Peay

TSU VOLLEYBALL WINS DEFENSIVE BATTLE OVER AUSTIN PEAY

NASHVILLE---A struggling Austin Peay team, put forth an impressive defensive performance but it wasn't enough as the Lady Tiger volleyball team shut-out the Lady Govs 3-0 (30-27, 32-30, 30-27) Thursday night in Kean Hall.

TSU (10-9, 8-2 OVC) registered a season-second best 84 digs in addition to 20 blocks while Austin Peay (7-14, 2-7 OVC) tallied 77 and 10. The Lady Tigers hit .159 while Austin Peay managed a hitting percentage of .095.

Kelly Davis recorded 12 kills for TSU while Dodi Szymska led Austin Peay with 23.

Melissa Silva (17), Christian Lowe (16), Candace Saleaumua (14) and Kamille King (14) each tallied double figures in digs for the Lady Tigers.

Kristen Kirch led Austin Peay with 29 digs.

Austin Peay played Tennessee State close in the first game and claimed small leads on a couple of occasions. With the game tied at 25, TSU outscored APSU 5-2 to squeeze out the 30-27 win.

Behind the serving of Kirsten Distler, Austin Peay scored the first five points of game two. TSU responded with a 7-2 run to even the game 7-7. The score went back and forth over the next several points. TSU pulled away (14-10) but Austin Peay would not go away.

With the game knotted 25-25, Austin Peay scored three unanswered points to take a 28-25 lead. Following a TSU timeout, two Oliver kills and a Dornan and Oliver block evened the game at 28.

Timely blocks and kills down the stretch helped propel the Lady Tigers to the extra points win.

Game three remained close from the onset. Austin Peay had a small lead (22-19) late in the game but TSU took the lead for good on a service ace by Candace Saleaumua (24-23). The Lady Govs continued to battle but the Lady Tigers were able to keep them at bay in route to the match victory.

The Lady Tigers return to action tomorrow when they host OVC opponent Tennessee Tech. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Kean Hall.
