--- The Tennessee
State University volleyball team swept UT-Martin to pick up an OVC road win
Friday night in Skyhawk Arena.
The set scores were 25-20, 25-19 and 25-18.
The Tigers (3-17, 2-6 OVC) snapped a seven-match losing skid
with the victory over the Skyhawks (7-13, 2-7 OVC), who dropped their fourth
straight.
Tennessee
State had an improved
.200 attack percentage for the match and tallied 41 kills while UT Martin hit
.110 and had 30 kills. TSU had 52 digs compared to UTM's 49 as each team
tallied seven team blocks.
Sophomore Shaquita Williams led the Tigers with a match-high
13 kills and hit .267. Junior Kamille King tallied 18 digs to lead TSU. Senior
Yamari Padilla-Collazo dished out a match-high 31 set assists.
UTM didn't have any players to post double-digits in kills
but Kasey Elswick recorded a match-high 24 digs.
A UTM ball handling error gave TSU an early 10-4 lead in the
first set. A kill by Yamari Padilla-Collazo stretched the advantage to 17-9 and
the Tigers never looked back.
With the score tied 7-7 in set two, TSU outscored UTM 10-5
to move ahead 17-12. The Tigers led by as many as seven points before claiming
the win.
TSU carried the momentum into set three posting seven
unanswered points to open the frame. The Skyhawks rallied to within two points,
17-15, but the Tigers used a 6-0 run to swell the lead back up to 23-15. UTM
never recovered. The Tigers hit an impressive .304 and only committed four
errors in the third set.
Tennessee State returns to action tomorrow against Murray State
at 2 p.m. in Racer Arena.
