Nashville --- The Tennessee State University volleyball team
fell to Murray State, 3-0, Friday night in Kean Hall.
Tennessee State fell to 3-26 (2-15 OVC) while Murray State
improved to 12-16 (11-6 OVC). The set scores were 18-25, 21-25 and 21-25.
Shaquita Williams led TSU with 11 kills while Kamille King
recorded a team best 10 digs. Yamari Padilla -Collazo dished out 33 set
assists for the Tigers.
Murray State's Logan Su tallied 15 kills on a .500 attack
percentage while Ashley Nenninger added 11. Kayleah Sauer and Lydia Orf each
recorded 14 digs for MSU.
In the first set, five unanswered points gave Murray State
the early lead. TSU posted the next two points but MSU responded with another
run to claim an 11-3 advantage. The Racers led by as many as 10 points before
going on to win.
A kill by Yamari Padilla- Collazo followed by a Shaquita Williams
service ace gave TSU a 10-5 lead in the second set. TSU led 15-10 when MSU went
on a 10-5 run to even the score 20-20. The Racers then closed out the frame by
outscoring the Tigers 5-1.
The third set went back and forth through the first several
rallies. With the score tied 13-13, the Racers posted the next three points to
move ahead 16-13. This led to a TSU timeout. A kill from Shawna Ruiz coupled
with a Terakka Walker service error brought the Tigers to within one (16-15)
but that would be as close as they would get.
The Racers were able to keep the Tigers at bay.
As a team, Tennessee State tallied 37 kills and had a .208
attack percentage. Murray State,
however, registered 51 kills and hit .370.
Tomorrow the Tigers will conclude the 2009 season with a
match-up against the Skyhawks of UT Martin. Before the match begins, seniors
Shawna Ruiz and Yamari Padilla- Collazo will be recognized. The contest is
slated for a 1 p.m. start in Kean Hall.
