Clarksville, Tenn. --- The Tennessee
State University volleyball team dropped its OVC opener to Austin Peay, 3-1,
Friday night in the Dunn
Center.
The set scores were 11-25, 25-19, 12-25 and 20-25.

tallied 36 kills and hit .109 in the match while Austin Peay (7-4, 1-0 OVC)
registered 53 kills and notched a .304 hitting percentage.
Terakka Walker led the Tigers with 11 kills and 13 digs for
a double-double while Calasia Williams added 11 digs.Yamari Padilla-Collazo handed out 28 set assists.
In set one, TSU lead early but APSU was close behind. With
the Tigers leading 5-4, the Lady Govs used three consecutive kills to capture
the advantage. Austin Peay then outscored Tennessee State
5-2 to go ahead 12-7 and force a Tiger timeout.
Out of the break, however, APSU scored five straight points
to extend the lead to 17-7 before eventually going on to win 25-11.
A service ace by Vicmari Prospero coupled with an APSU
attack error tied the score 4-4 in set two. Both teams traded points over the
next several rallies before the Tigers were able to create a little distance. A
kill by Santia Sanders and an ace by Shaquita Williams made the TSU lead 11-8.
APSU closed to within one (14-13) but TSU held on to the
lead and build the advantage back up to 21-17 after a kill by Terakka Walker.
This led to a Lady Gov timeout. The Tigers maintained their composure down the
stretch and won the set 25-19.
With the match tied 1-1, the Tigers struggled to score
points early in the third set, falling behind 9-3. The Tigers clawed back to
within two (11-9) but a 7-2 scoring run built the Lady Gov lead back up to
18-11. TSU called a timeout to regroup but four unanswered points by the Lady
Govs swelled the APSU lead to 22-11. APSU won the set 25-12.
In the fourth set, Austin Peay managed to capture a 16-12
lead. Following a Tennessee
State timeout and two
consecutive points from the Tigers, the score was 16-14. The Lady Govs then
outscored the Tigers 6-3 to go up 22-17. A kill by Terakka Walker and an APSU
violation brought the Tigers to within four (24-20) but that would be as close
as they would get as the Lady Govs went on to win 25-20.
The Tigers will have a week off before returning to OVC
action at Eastern Illinois and Southeast Missouri
next weekend.
