Charleston, Ill.
--- The Tennessee State University volleyball team picked up a road victory
over OVC opponent Eastern Illinois Friday
night in Lantz Arena.
The Tigers (2-10, 1-1 OVC) snapped a nine-match losing
streak with the victory over the Panthers (7-9, 1-3 OVC). The set scores were
25-17, 25-19, 18-25, 25-16.
TSU nearly had four players to post double digits in kills.
Junior Santia Sanders led the Tigers with 12 kills while sophomore Shaquita Williams added 11. Sophomore Terakka Walker was one dig shy of a double-double
with nine kills and 12 digs. Junior Vicmari Prospero tallied nine kills and
notched a match-high eight block assists.
Freshman Calasia Williams tallied a team best 13 digs while
seniors Shawna Ruiz and Yamari Padilla-Collazo added 11. Padilla-Collazo also dished
out 44 set assists.
Tennessee State tallied 49 kills and recorded a .217 attack percentage
on the night while Eastern Illinois notched 43
kills and only managed to hit .068 for the match. TSU only had 18 errors while
EIU committed 33 miscues. The Tigers also won the battle of the blocks 10 to
five.
TSU took control early, jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the
first set. TSU would hold on to the lead for the rest of the contest. The
Tigers went ahead 20-15 on a Panther service error and closed out the frame
with a 5-2 run.
In set two, with the score tied 12-12, the Panthers posted
the next two points to capture their first lead of the night. This led to a TSU timeout. The Tigers
regrouped after the break as a kill from Terakka Walker sparked a 13-5 that saw
TSU run away with the win.
With TSU leading the match 2-0, EIU battled to win in set
three and extended the contest to a fourth set.
In the fourth frame, the Tigers captured an 8-3 lead and
never looked back. The Panthers came to within two points, 18-16, but that
would be as close as they would get. TSU closed out the set scoring seven
straight points to seal the victory.
The Tigers will have little time to rest as they match-up
with the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Houck Fieldhouse.
SEMO dropped its home opener to Austin Peay, 3-0, tonight.
