Clarksville, Tenn. - Josh Sain and Jacquan Nobles each scored a
game-high, 20 points apiece, but Sain's last second shot to win the
game failed.
Tennessee State University, in another tightly fought game, suffered an OVC loss to Austin Peay State, 79-77, at the Dunn Center on
Saturday afternoon (1/16).
Four Tigers finished in double figures with Sain shooting
8-of-17 from the floor to go along with eight rebounds.
Nobles scored 16 points in the first half and shot
7-of-14 overall, with 4-of-8 coming from long range.
Robert Covington was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw
line registering 15 points and a team-high, nine boards. Darius Cox followed
with 10 points from 5-of-11 shooting and managed eight rebounds and a team-high
five assists.
TSU (4-15, 1-6 OVC) hit 43 percent from the floor, but a
32-percent shooting performance in the second half cooled them off.
In the first half, TSU shot 53 percent from the floor and 55
percent from three-point range. Trailing, 21-9 (11:38), TSU fell into rhythm
with a 16-2 run to take their first lead, 25-23 (6:27).
The Tigers posted their largest lead of the night, 40-31,
with Nobles scoring 11 points in the final six minutes of the half. APSU
chipped away at the lead on a 7-2 run to narrow TSU's lead at the break, 42-38.
TSU opened the second half extending their lead, 49-42. The
Governors followed with eight unanswered points to regain the advantage, 50-49
(15:38). The run triggered two lead changes within the next five
minutes of play.
Trailing, 74-66 (5:16), Covington scored seven straight
points and Nobles knocked down a jumper to give the Tigers an opportunity for
the win, but their final two possessions failed with APSU hitting a crucial
free throw at down the stretch.
The Governors (10-9, 4-3 OVC) finished with five players in
double figures shooting 52 percent from the floor and 40 percent from the arc.
Anthony Campbell tallied a double-double with 17 points (6-of-14) and 13
rebounds.
Wes Channels scored 16 points and Justin Blake went 6-of-9,
including 3-of-6 from behind the arc, to follow with 15 points.
John Fraley added 11 points with nine rebounds and Tyrone
Caldwell, giving the Govs a second-half lift, finished 5-of-5 from the floor
for 10 points.
The Tigers will continue OVC play when they head to
Jacksonville, Ala. to match-up with Jacksonville State. The game is slated for
Thursday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPNU.
