Nashville --- The Tennessee State University volleyball team extended its
win streak to three matches by winning a crucial OVC contest against
Jacksonville State Saturday afternoon in Kean Hall.
Tennessee State (8-15, 6-9 OVC) opened the match up with a
win before dropping two straight to Jacksonville State (12-12, 7-6 OVC). The
Tigers, however, answered with consecutive victories to close the match.
The set scores were 25-17, 22-25, 19-2, 24-15 and 15-11.
Tennessee State had four players to hit better than .300 in
the match. Shaquita Williams led a
balanced offensive attack for the Tigers with a match-high 20 kills (.432).
Santia Sanders recorded her second straight double-double with 15 kills and 11
digs while Vicmari Prospero registered 13 kills (.423).
Erika Moss notched a double-double with 51 assists and 14
digs to go along with four kills (.429). Calasia Williams paced the defense with
15 digs, while Terakka Walker tallied 13 and Kamille King added 12.
Kara Slater led Jacksonville State in kills with 12 while
Caitlin Vorbeck (11) and Jen Meyer (10) also posted double-digit kills. Lauren
Harkins led the team with 20 digs and Alyx Schulte registered 14.
In the opening set, TSU hit a blistering .538 and recorded
16 kills, including eight from Shaquita Williams. Williams hit .727 in the
frame as the Tigers used a 10-2 to pull away from the Gamecocks when the score
was tied, 15-15. TSU won the set, 25-17.
Both teams traded points in the second set before
Jacksonville State put together a small run to go ahead, 15-12. Later the
Tigers closed to within one but the Gamecocks used another rally to increase
their lead to 21-17. TSU once again came to within one, 23-22, but JSU posted
the next two points to hold on for the win.
Similar to the previous two, set three was a see-saw battle
that went back and forth. Neither team was able to pull away until the
Gamecocks used six unanswered points to grab a 24-18 lead. JSU won the set,
25-19, and captured a, 2-1, match lead.
The Tigers came alive in the fourth set as a kill by Vicmari
Prospero sparked a rally that led to TSU grabbing a 15-9 lead. The Tigers
swelled the advantage to 17-10 after Kamille King landed a service ace and continued
to roll. Back-to-back kills from Santia Sanders followed by a block assist from
Shaquita Williams and Danielle Howell stretched the score to, 20-10. TSU cruised
to the 25-14 win.
After playing to a 6-6 tie, a JSU error coupled with a kill
from Vicmari Prospero gave TSU an 8-6 edge at the halfway mark of the final set.
The Tigers moved ahead, 11-8, on kills from Prospero and Shaquita Williams
before going ahead, 13-9. The Gamecocks called a timeout and posted the next
two points out of the break. With TSU leading, 13-11, a kill from Santia
Sanders followed by a JSU attack error pushed the Tigers with the win.
Tennessee State finished the match with 66 kills and a .272
hitting percentage while Jacksonville State only managed 46 kills and hit .139.
TSU also held the advantage in digs, 71-61, team blocks, 12.5 - 7.0, and
assists, 59-43.
TSU returns to action on Friday, Nov. 5 at Southeast
Missouri. The Tigers will face the Redhawks at 7 p.m. in Houck Fieldhouse.
