Clarksville --- The Tennessee State University volleyball
team dropped three sets to second place Austin Peay Friday night in the Dunn Center.
The set scores were 21-25, 13-25, 17-25.
Tennessee State (9-16, 7-11 OVC) was led on offense by junior
Shaquita Williams with 11 kills. Williams only committed one error on 17
attempts for a .588 hitting percentage.
Ilyanna Hernandez led Austin Peay (23-6, 14-4 OVC) with 15 kills while Nikke
Doyle and Paige Economos turned in 13 digs each.
After trading points in the opening set, a kill by Vicmari
Prospero brought the score to 18-18. Austin Peay scored the next two points
before Shaquita Williams brought TSU back to within one, 21-19. The Lady Govs
then outscored the Tigers, 4-2, to capture the win.
Three straight errors led to TSU falling behind 15-9 in the
second set. The Tigers used a timeout in an attempt to slow the Lady Govs down
but APSU stretched its advantage to 17-10. APSU closed out the frame with an 8-3 run on the way to the
win.
APSU carried the momentum into the third set, jumping out to
a 10-4 lead. A kill by Kinsley Williams sparked a run that brought TSU to
within two, 12-10 but the Lady Govs answered with a spurt that put them back on
top, 18-11. APSU held on to win, 25-17.
Tennessee State tallied 32 kills and hit .178 while Austin
Peay registered 46 kills and a .400 hitting percentage.
The Tigers will conclude the 2010 season on Sunday when they
host the Cougars of SIU-Edwardsville on Senior Day. Seniors Kamille King,
Vicmari Prospero and Santia Sanders will be recognized. Match time is slated
for 12 p.m. in Kean Hall.
