Charleston, Ill. --- The Tennessee State University volleyball win streak
came to an end Saturday afternoon when the Tigers suffered a 3-0 loss to
Eastern Illinois.
Tennessee State (9-16, 7-10 OVC) had 44 kills and hit .193
in the match while Eastern Illinois (15-14, 7-9 OVC) finished with 45 kills and
a .246 hitting percentage.The set scores were 20-25, 20-25, 25-27.
Santia Sanders was the only player to post double-digit
kills and recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs. Calasia Williams
paced the defense with 15 digs while Kamille King added 14.
Alex Zwettler led EIU with 15 kills while Brittany Wallace
registered a team best 16 digs for the Panthers.
After playing to a 6-6 tie in the opening set, Eastern
Illinois posted four unanswered points to grab a 10-6 lead. Later on in the set,
a couple of Tiger attack errors followed by a Panther service ace stretched the
EIU lead to 17-10. TSU managed to cut the deficit down to four points but EIU
held on to win, 25-20.
In the second set, TSU fell behind early but battled back to
knot the score, 13-13. The Panthers, however, responded with a 7-1 run to grab
a 20-14 advantage. The Tigers were never able to overcome the deficit as the
Panthers went on to win the frame and take a 2-0 match lead.
It took extra points to decide the winner in the third set.
After trading points throughout the frame, EIU managed to build an 18-15 lead.
The Tigers fell behind, 20-16, before outscoring the Panthers 5-1 to knot the
score at 21-all. From there a battle ensued as neither team would give way. The
score was at a 25-25 deadlock when two timely kills from the Panthers pushed
EIU to the win.
The Tigers will play their final OVC contest of the season
on Friday, Nov. 12 at Austin Peay. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. at the Dunn
Center.
