Jacksonville, Ala. --- The Tennessee State University
volleyball team came up on the short end of a five-set battle to Jacksonville
State falling to the Gamecocks, 3-2, Friday Night in Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Tennessee State (3-8, 1-2 OVC) dropped its second straight
while Jacksonville State (7-7, 2-1 OVC) extended its home winning streak to 14
matches. The set scores were 25-22, 20-25, 19-25, 25-21 and11-15.
Shaquita Williams, the only Tiger to post double-digits in kills,
led TSU with 11. She only committed one error in the contest and hit a
blistering .476. Erika Moss and Calasia Williams each recorded 11 digs for the
Tigers. Moss also turned in a team-best 36 set assists and Vicmari Prospero led TSU with
seven blocks (six block assists).
JSU had four players that notched double-digit kills led by
Jen Meyer with 17. Kara Slater (13), Alyx
Schulte (12), and Caitlin Vorbeck (11).
After securing a 25-22 win in the opening frame, on a kill
from Vicmari Prospero, Tennessee State would drop the next two sets and fall
behind, 2-1.
Not to be denied the Tigers, used six unanswered points
behind the serve of Terakka Walker to jump out to an 8-2 lead and force an
early Gamecock timeout in set four. After the break, JSU managed to narrow the
gap down to just one point but TSU used another run to pull away. The Tigers
increased the lead to 18-12 before going on to win the set.
In the fifth and final frame, the teams battled to a 6-6 tie
before JSU took the lead for good. With the score, 11-10, in favor of the
Gamecocks, JSU outscored TSU, 4-1, to pull out the win.
Neither team hit particularly well in the contest as
Tennessee State registered a .122 and Jacksonville State finished the match
with a .176 hitting percentage.
Tomorrow TSU will look to bounce back in another OVC
match-up against Tennessee Tech. Match time is slated for 2 p.m. at Eblen
Center.
