Martin, Tenn. - With five minutes remaining, the Tennessee State University Tigers were
able to outlast a 10-2 run by UT Martin for a 67-64
OVC win at the Elam Center on Saturday.
Holding on to a one-point lead with seven seconds left, Wil
Peters knocked down two free throws and UTM missed a desperation three-point
attempt to help TSU snap a three-game skid.
Robert Covington finished with game-highs, notching his
fifth career double-double, with 18 points; 14 coming in the first half, and 15
rebounds. He shot 7-of-13 from the floor, dished out four assists while tacking
on five steals and two blocks.
Kenny Moore added 15 points, six rebounds and a career high,
five assists. Patrick Miller scored 11 points from 4-of-8 shooting, posting a
career and tying a game-high with six assists.
For the game, TSU (7-9, 4-2 OVC) shot 48 percent from the
floor and three-point range, winning the rebounding effort, 35-28. The Tigers
held their largest lead in the first half, 31-15, from a 17-2 run.
UTM answered back to close out the half, outscoring the
Tigers 16-7, but continued to trail at the break, 38-31. The Tigers only
increased their lead back to eight points in the second but was able to answer
the Skyhawks' short runs for the final outcome.
UTM (4-12, 0-5 OVC) drops their fifth straight, tenth in OVC
play, shooting 44 percent from the floor on the night.
Reuben Clayton led the Skyhawks with 14 points from 4-of-8
shooting. Andres Irarrazabel shot 6-of-8 for 12 points, finishing with a team
high nine rebounds.
Up next, the Tigers will host the top team in the OVC, Austin
Peay State, for the White Out at the Gentry Center. The highly anticipated
rivalry will be televised on ESPNU and is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 15, with
a 3 p.m. tip-off.
