Jacksonville, Ala. --- The Tennessee State University volleyball team picked up a 3-1 road win over Jacksonville State Saturday afternoon at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

TSU improved to 8-5 (4-2 OVC) while JSU fell to 5-11 (3-3 OVC). The set scores were 25-21, 26-28, 25-18, 25-21.

Shaquita Williams led TSU with 17 kills behind a .293 hitting percentage while Danielle Howell added 13. Britani Hathorn led the team with 24 digs as Terakka Walker posted 20. Rebecca Moudree (15), Erika Moss (11) and Calasia Williams (11) also registered double-digits in digs.

Stephanie Koontz led JSU with 13 kills while Kelly Cole and Hivya Leite notched 17 digs for the Gamecocks.

In the opening set, Tennessee State was leading 13-12 when a kill by Danielle Howell sparked a 6-0 run that put the Tigers on top, 19-12. JSU cut the deficit down to two, 20-18, but TSU used five unanswered points to close out the frame and claim the win.

Neither team hit particularly well in the second set as TSU posted a .037 and JSU registered a .096 hitting percentage. It took extra points to decide but the Gamecocks were able to squeeze out the, 28-26, win and even the match, 1-1.

A couple of attack errors by Jacksonville State made the score, 15-9, in favor of Tennessee State in the third set. The Gamecocks pulled to within three but that would be as close as they would get as TSU went on to win, 25-18.

With the frame tied in the fourth set, the Tigers outscored the Gamecocks, 9-5, to capture a 17-13 lead. JSU closed to within two (20-18) following a TSU attack error but the Tigers used another small run to seal the win.

TSU hit .114 in the match and tallied 49 kills while JSU only managed a .075 hitting percentage and 38 kills.

Tennessee State has a brief break before returning to action at home versus Morehead State on Monday, Oct. 3. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. in Kean Hall.
