Nashville, Tenn. --- The Tennessee State University
volleyball team defeated Tennessee Tech in three straight sets Saturday
afternoon in Kean Hall.
The set scores were: 25-23, 25-19, 25-18.
With the win, Tennessee State improved to 14-9 (10-6 OVC)
while Tennessee Tech fell to 4-22 (3-13 OVC).
Terakka Walker led TSU with 16 kills while Shaquita Williams
added 11. Danielle Howell just missed double-digits with nine kills behind an
impressive .727 hitting percentage.
Britani Hathorn paced the Tiger defense with 14 digs while
Erika Moss dished out 36 set assists.
Tennessee Tech was led by Natalie Penrod's 12 kills while
Madison Comperry recorded 20 set assists.
The score was tied 10-10 in the opening set when the Tigers
used a 5-0 run to capture a 15-10 advantage. Later in the frame, back-to-back
kills from Terakka Walker and Shaquita Williams made the score, 18-12, in favor
of the home team. Tech pulled to within one, four different times before
finally knotting the score at 23-all. TSU, however, managed to hold on for the
win following a TTU service error and a service ace from Calasia Williams.
In the second set, TSU grabbed a, 20-16, lead behind a block
from Terakka Walker and Shaquita Williams. A kill from Walker made TSU's
advantage, 22-17, before the Tigers went on to win, 25-19. TSU hit .364 in the
contest.
A kill by Erika Moss put TSU on top, 8-3, in the third set. After
TSU increased the advantage to, 10-4, TTU called a timeout in attempt to slow
down the momentum. The Tigers, however, continued to roll and stretched the
lead to, 19-9, before going on to win, 25-18.
Tennessee State hit a scorching .374 and tallied 50 kills in
the contest while Tennessee Tech only managed 34 kills behind a .253 hitting
percentage. TSU also held the advantage in digs, 36-27.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, Nov.1 when they host
Lipscomb. Match time is slated for 6 p.m. in Kean Hall.
