Nashville, Tenn. --- The Tennessee State University
volleyball team stayed undefeated at home as the Tigers swept Eastern Illinois
Saturday afternoon in Kean Hall.
With the win, Tennessee State improved to 7-4 (3-1 OVC)
while Eastern Illinois fell to 4-11 (2-3 OVC). The set scores were: 25-16,
31-29 and 26-24.
Shaquita Williams led TSU with 15 kills (.433) while Terakka
Walker added 12. Britani Hathorn paced the Tigers with 12 digs as Calasia
Williams and Rebecca Moudree each tallied 10.
The Panthers did not have any players to reach double-digits
in kills but Kat Gosewisch recorded 12 digs to lead EIU.
Tennessee State controlled the first set and out killed
Eastern Illinois, 16-5. TSU hit .387 in the frame while only committing four
errors. EIU registered a dismal
-.033 hitting percentage behind six errors. The Tigers won the set, 25-16.
In the second set the teams traded points until TSU used a
run to create a little distance. A kill by Shaquita Williams coupled with a
Panther error made the score 15-10 in favor of TSU. The Tigers were leading 23-20 when the Panthers used a rally
to even the score at 24-all. Moudree put TSU back on top with a kill but EIU
answered right back with a point. The frame went on like this for a while until
TSU was finally able to squeeze out the, 31-29 win.
Much like the second, the third set was a battle. EIU was
able to build a small lead but TSU fought back and evened the score at 14-14
behind a service ace from Shaquita
Williams. The frame took extra points to decide but the Tigers pushed to get
the 26-24 victory.
Tennessee State finished the match with 48 kills and a .273
hitting percentage. Eastern Illinois had 36 kills and hit .194 in the contest.
The Tigers return to action when they head to Cookeville to
face Tennessee Tech on Friday Sept. 30.
