NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State beat Eastern Illinois in Kean Hall by a 3-0 score for a second consecutive conference win.
Another strong performance came from outside hitter Chloe Watson as she recorded 16 kills. Defensively Cherlie Adorno-DeJesus and Taylor Patterson paced the team with 16 digs each. Samantha Beltran contributed 33 assists while contributing five kills and having a .833 hitting percentage. As a team the Tigers had one of their best offensive performances this season having a team hitting percentage of .458. TSU would win by scores of (25-8, 25-23, 25-13).
TSU started set one with three straight blocks to take a 3-2 lead. The Tigers forced the Panthers to take an early timeout with the score 6-2. Two aces by Patterson and a Watson kill pushed the Tennessee State lead to 9-3. A kill by freshman Julia Pierson made the score 15-4 and the Panthers would take another timeout. A Patterson kill followed by an Arijana Anderson kill increased the Tiger lead to 23-7. Payten Clark ended the frame with a kill giving TSU the win.
The second frame started with a kill from Patterson and a 3-1 TSU lead. A TSU service error stopped a Tiger run with a 7-3 score. Tennessee State committed a blocking error which made the score 11-6. After a Pierson kill gave TSU a seven point lead EIU would take another timeout. The Panthers went on a 5-1 run that closed the gap to 16-13. EIU pulled within two before an Anderson kill gave the Tigers a 19-16 advantage. After the Panthers moved within one point the Tigers took a timeout up 23-22. Frame number two ended the same way the first set ended with a Clark kill.
The third stanza started with each team trading points. TSU would then take a five point advantage on consecutive service aces by Watson. With the score 9-3 Eastern Illinois burned a timeout. The Tigers would increase their advantage to 15-6 on a Patterson ace. TSU continued to build on their lead pushing the score to 20-9. Alexis Johnson finished the final frame with a kill that gave TSU a win.
