Tigers Fall to EKU in Straight Sets

RICHMOND, KY. --- Tennessee State traveled to Eastern Kentucky where they faced off with the Colonels in a conference match. The Tigers would eventually fall in straight sets.

Julia Pierson led the attack for TSU tallying 12 kills on the night. Arijana Anderson would add 10 kills of her own in the match. The two would combine for 22 of the 37 total kills for the Tigers. Defensively Taylor Patterson would record the most digs with 16 followed closely by Cherlie Adorno-DeJesus with 15. Samantha Beltran had 30 assists for Tennessee State.

TSU started off set one down 7-2 before going on a run to pull the score within one at 9-8. Eastern Kentucky went on a run and Tennessee State would finnd themselves trailing 18-12. The Colonels had 18 kills and hit .318 in the first set. EKU would use large runs to win the first frame 25-20. Pierson led the Tigers with five kills.   

The second frame began with a back and forth match with neither team really establishing a lead. Halfway through set two the score was tied at 12 apiece. After a TSU timeout EKU would stretch the score to 17-14. The Tigers struggled defensively allowing the Colonels to have a hitting percentage of .313 through the first two sets. Eastern Kentucky won the second stanza by a 25-18 score.

Following a 10 minute intermission the Tigers came out and took an 8-4 lead to start the third frame. EKU would tie the score at 10 all before giving TSU a one point lead on a service error. The Tigers would build a 16-12 lead in the set. Eastern Kentucky would once again tie the score at 19-19 before back to back kills put TSU up 21-19. A kill by EKU would end the set and match with the Colonels winning the set 25-23.

Up Next: The Tigers travel to Morehead State for another road conference match against the Golden Eagles.
