Cape Girardeau, Mo. – Tennessee State dropped both ends of a double header on Saturday at Southeast Missouri State. The Tigers lost the Ohio Valley Conference opener 7-2 and fell in five innings, 9-0, in game two.
The losses extends the Tigers losing streak to 10 games as they move to 7-25, 0-7 in conference, while Southeast Missouri improves to 11-14, 5-2 in the OVC.
In game one, the Redhawks gained an early 1-0 lead before the Tigers were able to answer with runs in the second and third innings. TSU opened the top of the second with back-to-back doubles by Lauren Dreitlein and Lauren Woodard evening the score at 1-1.
The Tigers used back-to-back bunt singles by Courtney Gearlds and Danica Gleason to start the top of the third. TSU earned their lone lead of the day as Lindsey Burgess executed a perfect squeeze bunt allowing Gearlds to score, making the score 2-1.
Southeast Missouri wasted no time to get the run back with a run in the bottom of the frame and regained the lead with two runs in the fourth. The Redhawks add three insurance runs in the sixth to provide the final score.
Woodard (2-15) was touched for seven runs on nine hits and four walks while fanning two.
Gleason and Dreitlein each notched two hits to lead the Tigers at the plate in game two and were joined in the hit column by Gearlds and Joselyn Yates. The Tigers were not able to string enough hits together to score as they were shutout for the ninth time this season.
Lauren Powell (3-6) surrendered three runs on four hits in the first inning and was tagged with the loss. Erica O'Kane tossed the final three innings and allowed six runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks.
The Tigers will step out of conference play to host Middle Tennessee for a single game on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m.
