Tigers Drop Road Contest at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Tennessee State softball team took to the road after a nine game home stand and traveled to Birmingham, Ala. on Friday afternoon for a single game. The Tigers would get runners on in each of the first five innings, but were unable to put a run on the scoreboard in an 8-0 loss. TSU fell to 4-11, while the Bulldogs improved to 9-6 on the year.

The Tigers placed four runners on base through the first three innings before the Bulldogs could manage a baserunner. Starting pitcher Lauren Woodard worked a pair of three-up, three-down innings before surrendering a pair of home runs in the third, as Samford moved out to a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers would threaten in the fourth as Joselynn Yates reached on a one-out single to center. With two outs, Cariona Hassell drove a ball off the wall in right center for a double. On the play, Yates was held at third as Samford would quickly get the ball back into the infield and continue to hold the three-run lead.

The Bulldogs would plate a pair of runs in the fourth inning off reliever Erica O'Kane to extend their lead to 5-0 and closed out the contest with three runs in the bottom of the fifth off the Tigers third pitcher, Lauren Powell.

Abi Stephens and Whitney Ennis joined Woodard, Yates and Hassell in the hit column on Friday.

TSU will return home to host Youngstown State in a twin bill at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
