Tigers Swept at Home by SIUE

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State softball team opened its final home stand of the season with a pair of losses to SIUE on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field. The Cougars needed five innings to claim gamed one, 8-0, before using a late comeback to secure the sweep, 4-1.

SIUE moved to 11-7 in Ohio Valley Conference play and 19-20 on the season. The Tigers playoff hopes are still alive, despite falling to 3-16 in the OVC, 10-37 overall.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead with six runs on five hits in the second inning. Alyssa Heren delivered the big blow with a two-run triple to make the score 3-0. SIUE added a pair of runs in the third and pitcher Baylee Douglass made the score stand on a two-hit shutout. The sophomore hurler held the Tigers hitless until Lauren Dreitlein punched a hot into left center with two outs in the fourth.

Joselynn Yates collected the other hit for TSU to open the fifth inning, but was stranded at first base.

Lauren Powell suffered the loss allowing six runs on five hits and a walk in 1.1 innings of work. Powell recorded one strikeout as she dropped to 4-12 on the season.

Game two started as a pitcher's duel between Lauren Woodard and the Cougars' Ashley Koziol. The two pitchers kept the game scoreless until the Tigers scored in the bottom of the fifth.

Erica O'Kane opened the inning with a double to right field, before being replaced in favor of Kierra Ware. The pinch runner moved to third on a ground out by Whitney Ennis and scored on an infield single by Abi Stephens.

SIUE responded in the next half inning as they batted around, using four hits and a key error to plate four runs.

Douglass entered in relief to earn her second win of the day to improve to 13-8 after tossing 2.1 innings of no hit ball.

Woodard was credited with the loss as she went the distance, as she gave up four runs, two earned, on eight hits. The junior pitcher moved to 4-20 on the year.

The Tigers will close out the home portion of its schedule with a conference double header against Eastern Illinois. The senior day festivities will begin prior to first pitch, scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
