Women's Basketball Stumbles at SIUE

FINAL BOX

Edwardsville, Ill. --- Offensive struggles hampered the Tennessee State women's basketball team in a, 73-52, loss to SIU Edwardsville Wednesday afternoon in the Vadalabene Center.

TSU (8-10, 3-4 OVC) fell behind 37-24 at halftime after suffering critical scoring droughts in each of the opening quarters and was not able to recover.  Jayda Johnson led TSU with 19 points while Kaliya Griffin added 13.

SIUE (8-13, 4-4 OVC) had three players to score in double-digits led by Nakiah Bell's 17 points. Lauren White (11), Gwen Adams (10) and Micah Jones (10) also posted double-figures.

After a quick start by both teams, TSU trailed 11-9 at the first media timeout. Both teams were scorching from the field, shooting at least 50 percent.

Out of the break, the TSU offense went stagnant. Meanwhile, SIUE fired off eight straight points to grab a 19-9 lead. The Lady Tigers went without a field goal the rest of the quarter and were outscored, 10-1, to fall behind, 21-10, at the end of the quarter.

TSU began to chip away at the lead in the second period and used an 11-4 rally to pull within four, 25-21. SIUE answered with a 6-0 spurt to move back up by double-digits. The Lady Tigers once again hit an offensive lull and saw the Cougars extend their advantage to 35-21 with 1:30 left in the first half.

Diamond Beatty managed to connect on her first three-pointer of the game with 22 seconds remaining to end TSU's nearly six minute scoring drought but at that point, the Lady Tigers were down, 37-24, heading into the halftime break.

TSU's offensive struggles continued in the third quarter and SIUE stretched the lead to 43-26. Despite their efforts, the Lady Tigers were not able to cut into the lead and fell behind, 48-30, late in the period. SIUE sank a triple just before the buzzer to carry a 55-35 lead into the final frame. TSU was outscored 18-11 in the stanza.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers made every effort to get back into the game but the deficit proved too much to overcome.

Tennessee State returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 against league leader Belmont. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
