NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State dropped the final game of the Tiger Classic to Iowa State on Sunday afternoon. The Cyclones were able to fend off a couple of late inning threats by the Tigers to claim a 2-0 win. The loss moved the Tigers to 3-6 on the season as Iowa State improved to 7-3.
Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, TSU attempted a two-out rally. Danica Gleason and Kim Trice delivered back-to-back singles before Patton Akers earned a walk to load the bases off ISU starter Savannah Sanders. The Cyclones went to the bullpen to call on Emma Hylen who earned a save against TSU on Friday. The relief pitcher enticed a strikeout from Emma Colegrove to end the Tigers threat.
In the seventh, The Tigers once again attempted a two-out rally as Maggie Syversen is hit by a pitch and Selena Crafton walks to put runners on first and second. Courtney Gearlds followed with a ground ball to short and came up short at first trying to beat out the play and extend the game.
The ISU pitching staff held the Tigers to four hits on the day. Colegrove collected the first with a two-out double to left center in the second, while Erica O'Kane earned a single in the fifth before Gleason and Trice produced hit in the sixth.
In the circle, Tori Hart went the distance scattering six hits and two walks. The Cyclones were able to touch the freshman hurler for runs in the second and third off five hits for the 2-0 lead. Hart (2-2) surrendered one hit over the final four innings to keep TSU within striking distance.
The Tigers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 24 as they host Alabama State for a doubleheader at Tiger Field.
