Slow Third Quarter Hurts TSU in Loss to Tech

FINAL STATS 

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team fell to Tennessee Tech, 72-59, Wednesday afternoon in the Gentry Center on Kid's Day.

Tennessee State led by one point at halftime but the after the offense went cold in the third quarter, the Lady Tigers were outscored, 17-7, in the frame.

TSU (9-13, 4-8 OVC) was led in scoring by Olivia Jones' 15 points and 12 rebounds while Jayda Johnson scored 10.

Tennessee Tech (10-15, 7-5 OVC) had four players to score in double-digits led by Yaktavia Hickson (24). Treyvonna Brooks (16), Hannah Goolsby (11) and Akia Harris (11) also paced the Golden Eagles.

TSU trailed Tennessee Tech 9-6 at the first media timeout before Jayda Johnson found Tiana Parker under the basket to even the score at 10-all.The Lady Tigers briefly took a 15-14 lead behind a bucket from Rekha Berry but The Golden Eagles regained the advantage just before the quarter ended.

The Golden Eagles outscored the Lady Tigers 7-2 to start the second period and moved ahead, 23-17. TSU was trailing, 29-20, when five straight points from Diamond Beatty cut the deficit down to four points.

The Lady Tigers closed out the quarter with an 8-1 run to capture the advantage, 33-32, at the halftime break.

In the third frame, the momentum shifted.  TTU used an 8-2 spurt to regain the lead, 40-35, before the first media timeout. TSU only managed to score seven points in the frame and went into the final period down, 49-40.  

The TSU offense continued to struggle in the fourth quarter and the Lady Tigers sank into a 54-40 hole. Nearly four minutes ticked-off the clock before TSU finally got on the board with a bucket from Olivia Jones.

At the final media timeout, Tech had a 62-46 edge. The visitors never relinquished the lead from that point.

TSU shot 41.5 percent from the field but only made 1-of-11 from three-point range and 14-of-27 from the free-throw line.

Tech shot 46 percent from the floor including 50 percent from beyond the arc. TTU also made 22-of-31 from the charity stripe.

Tennessee State returns to action on Saturday at Jacksonville State. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Pete Mathews Coliseum.
