Tiger Volleyball Struggles in 3-1 Loss to EIU

CHARLESTON, Ill. --- The Tennessee State volleyball team travelled to Charleston, Ill. looking to improve their 1-2 Ohio Valley Conference record against the Eastern Illinois Panthers. In another OVC four-set battle, the Tigers fell to the Panthers 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 23-25, 25-15) at Lantz Arena.

TSU (5-11, 1-3 OVC) was led by Rachel Henderson who finished the match hitting .425 with a career-high 21 kills and six blocks, three solo and three assisted. Henderson scored 25.5 points for the Tigers leading both teams.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Rachel Henderson led the Tigers offense through four sets and recorded a career-high 21 kills with only four errors resulting in a .425 hitting percentage.
  • The Tigers recorded seven team blocks, facilitated by Rachel Henderson, Sam Beltran and Alexis Johnson.

SET BY SET

First Set: Big Blue had a frantic start to the match allowing the Panthers to go on multiple four-point runs. After a Tiger timeout, TSU picked up tempo, and came back with Rachel Henderson producing two solo blocks and by the end of the set, led both teams in kills. Due to the slow start, and multiple errors, the Panthers prevailed winning set one 25-15.

Second Set:  The Tigers continued to set the tempo after the first set. Rachel Henderson lead the Tigers offensively, scoring another 5.5 points facilitated by setter Samantha Beltran who lead both teams in assists with 17. TSU pushed the entire set returning the Panthers .333 hitting percentage with a 15 digs and two blocks, but eventually fell 25-22.

Third Set: Tigers again took the lead from the beginning of the set going 6-3 before the Panthers took the lead. Big Blue was down 20-15 before something kicked in. Katora Roberts and Maya Evans showed up and recorded a combined six kills and three block assists. And with the final two kills, Rachel Henderson forced set four as the Tigers won 25-23.

Fourth Set: The Panthers dominated in the final set. Henderson continued her offensive lead by putting down six kills. Cherlie Adorno DeJesus dominated on defense having eight digs. In the end, the team fell in the final set 25-15.  

MATCH NOTES

  • TSU lose to EIU 3-1. Tigers are now 5-12 overall, 1-3 in OVC play.
  • The Tigers are on a two-game losing streak.

TSU travels to Jacksonville State to take on the Gamecocks Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
