O'Kane's Two Home Run Performance Not Enough on Saturday for Tigers

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Tennessee State dropped a pair of games on day two of the Chattanooga Challenge, despite the efforts of Erica O'Kane. The junior hammered two home runs as part of her 3-for-5 performance on Saturday. The Tigers moved to 0-7 on the season after falling to Western Kentucky, 16-4, in five innings and 8-7 in six innings to Indiana State.

The second contest was called due to heavy rain fall and deteriorating field conditions after one pitch was thrown in the seventh inning. TSU hoped for an opportunity to pick up their first win of the season as Kasey Cox, O'Kane and Megan Huppee were due up. The trio was a combined 4-for-7 with four runs, two RBI, a triple and a dinger during the matchup.

Maddison Clark drilled her first career home run in the game and accounted for one of the Tigers nine hits. It was the second time this season TSU out hit its opponent (9-7).

O'Kane hit her first home run of the day in the bottom of the first inning of the opener. It was one of four hits for the Tigers and one of three extra base hits.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

vs. Western Kentucky

  • Erica O'Kane hit a two-run shot in the first inning to cut into an early lead by Western Kentucky, 4-2.
  • Emma Colegrove started the second inning off with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Kierra Ware.
  • Ware stole second base and scored on a Megan Huppee double.
  • Huppee scored two batters later as Bri Vire drove a ball into the right centerfield gap.
  • WKU responded with runs in the next three innings to solidify the win.
  • Lauren Powell took the loss in the circle, after spelling O'Kane in the circle.

vs. Indiana State

  • Sarah Snell was hit on the first pitch of the game.
  • The sophomore advanced to third on a Patton Akers sacrifice bunt.
  • Snell scored two pitches later on a wild pitch.
  • Indiana State took the lead with two runs in the first, but TSU responded immediately with three runs in the second.
  • Huppee and Reese Weber started the inning with back-to-back singles, and each used a wild pitch to advance 60 feet.
  • Maddison Clark sat on a 2-2 offering and drove the ball over the leftfield fence for a 3-run home run.
  • The Tigers took a 5-2 lead in the third as they took advantage of an ISU miscue.
  • With the bases loaded, Whitney Ennis grounded to second base, forcing Kasey Cox out at home plate; the throw from the catcher on the double play attempt at first, sailed down the right field line, allowing O'Kane to score from second.
  • ISU evened the score at 5-5 in their half of the frame with a run shot off starter Amanda Cabrera.
  • The Sycamores continued its scoring with three in the fourth to take an 8-5 lead.
  • In the TSU fifth, Kasey Cox jump started the Tigers with a triple to right field.
  • O'Kane followed by jumping on a 3-1 pitch, which easily cleared the fence in left center, bringing the Tigers back within one, 8-7.
  • The game was called after one pitch to Cox in the top of the seventh due to continued heavy rain.

UP NEXT
The Tigers will once again face Indiana State during the final day of the tournament. TSU faces off against ISU at 11:00 a.m. ET before taking on the host Mocs at 1:00 p.m. ET.
