Weber's First Career Home Run Not Enough for Tigers

NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State dropped both games on day one of the Belmont/Tennessee State Invitational despite the first collegiate home run by Reese Weber. The solo shot by the sophomore was the lone run on the day for TSU as the dropped a 3-1 contest to Rhode Island and a 5-0 decision to St. Bonaventure.

The Tigers could only manage five hits on the day. Tassy Lyles dropped a pair of bunt single in the night cap, while Weber, Katie Schneider and Whitney Ennis notched hits in the opener.

Lauren Powell was outdueled in the first game of the day by URI pitcher Becca Rogers. Powell struck out nine Rams but was touched for three runs, while Rogers punched out 11 Tigers in a three hit, three walk performance.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Tassy Lyles recorded two hits in her lone start against St. Bonaventure.
  • Lyles was the only Tiger to register a hit against SBU.
  • Reese Weber, Kate Schneider and Whitney Ennis all had hits versus Rhode Island.
  • Weber hammered her first collegiate home run with a shot to centerfield in the sixth inning against URI.

vs. RHODE ISLAND

  • Reese Weber became the first base runner of the game for the Tigers with a two out walk in the first inning.
  • Katie Schneider collected TSUs first hit with a high upper up the middle in the fourth.
  • The Rams scored first with two runs in the top of the fifth.
  • Whitney Ennis opened the bottom half of the frame with a single down the third base line and made way for pinch runner Ariel Johnson.
  • Johnson stole second, but was left on base.
  • URI added a run in the sixth to extend their advantage to 3-0.
  • Reese Weber hit her first home run over the centerfield fence to cut the lead to 3-1.
  • Lauren Powell took the loss despite fanning nine batters.

vs. ST. BONAVENTURE

  • Sarah Snell hit a leadoff single and stole second base in the bottom of the first, but was stranded.
  • Tassy Lyles earned the Tigers first hit of the game with a bunt single in the thrd.
  • Lyles stole second but could move no further.
  • Lyles recorded a second bunt single, this time in the sixth, but was cut down trying to swipe second.
  • The Tigers were held to two hits by Bonnies pitcher Rylee Hehir (3-3)
  • Tori Hart tossed her first complete game of the season.

UP NEXT

Tennessee State will continue play on day two of the Belmont/TSU Invitational with a pair of games. TSU will face Samford at 10:00 a.m. and close out the day with Ball State at 12:15 p.m.

NOTES

  • The Tigers wore their white tops with the blue horizontal stripes along with white pants and solid blue sock.
  • Sarah Snell went 0-for-3 versus Rhode Island bringing her streak of reaching base to and end at 13 games.
