NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team fell to the University of Tennessee, 73-43, Thursday night in Thompson Boling Arena.

Tennessee State moved to 1-1 while Tennessee remained undefeated at 4-0.

Taylor Roberts led TSU in scoring with 12 points while freshman Deaja Richardson registered 11 points.

TSU had a strong showing in the first half but UT pulled away in the second period. Despite getting outrebounded, TSU managed to grab 38 boards in the contest.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • TSU fell behind the SEC opponent 8-2 before Jaden Wrightsell scored to end a nearly five-minute drought.
  • The score was 10-4 in favor of UT when back-to-back three pointers from Wrightsell and Terrysha Banner tied the game 10-10.
  • TSU trailed 14-10 heading into the second quarter.
  • A turnaround jumper from Breannah McCullah got TSU on the board in the second period before Deaja Richardson sank the Lady Tigers' third triple of the contest to make the score, 18-15.
  • The home team increased its lead to 23-15 before an old fashioned three-point play by Keniece Purvis led to TSU closing the gap to, 24-20.
  • The Lady Vols, however, outscored the Lady Tigers 11-2 to finish the quarter and moved ahead, 35-22, at the break.
  • UT went without a field goal for a stretch of 3:31 but TSU couldn't capitalize as the Lady Tigers also suffered through a four-minute scoring drought.
  • The Lady Tigers continued to struggle while the Lady Vols started to click and put together a rally that extended their lead to, 51-27, at the end of the third.
  • UT opened the final stanza with an 8-2 run that opened the advantage up to, 59-29, and forced a TSU timeout.
  • The deficit proved too much to overcome.

GAME NOTES

  • UT improved to 6-0 in the all-time series history.
  • TSU scored 26 bench points compared to 31 for UT.
  • The Lady Tigers scored their most points in the fourth quarter.

  • Tennessee State will return to Nashville to host North Alabama on Monday, Nov. 18. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
